2017 legislative session begins

Growth is the key to solving Iowa’s economic woes, state Senate Majority Leader Bill Dix, R-Shell Rock, said during the opening day of the 2017 legislative session.
The state faces a number of serious problems, Dix said Jan. 9. Among those problems are declining school enrollment in rural areas, stagnant wages and unsustainable government spending, he said.
“We should be making our state attractive, inviting, and a great place to live for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” Dix said. “We must foster an environment that creates flourishing career opportunities for those graduating high school, college and for those seeking to embark on a new career path.”
Dix said Iowans not only laid out those problems, but also resoundingly supported his party’s approach to resolving the situations, by electing Republican majorities to both the House and the Senate this last fall.
