Calhoun County writer takes on extern to showcase English careers

Rachel Hemer said she found herself falling into a rut when answering her students’ questions about what career they could pursue if they studied English in college.
Hemer, who has been teaching for more than a dozen years, said she would enthusiastically encourage them to consider becoming an English teacher. After all, it was a job she loved.
But she knew there had to be more English careers out there. She just didn’t know what they were. So when the opportunity came up to apply for an externship through Iowa Central Community College, to essentially job shadow someone working in the field she teaches.
Iowa Central paired Hemer with Darcy Maulsby, a Yetter freelance writer.
Both women call the partnership a resounding success, and Hemer said her eyes are now open to the many jobs her students could consider if they like reading, writing and communications.
