South Central Calhoun School District board members are considering whether the district should – and could – pick up the cost for teachers to meet the new requirements to teach dual-enrollment college courses.
Iowa Central Community College informed SCC Superintendent Jeff Kruse and SCC teachers of the change, which will now require the dual enrollment instructors to have 18 graduate course hours in their subject area instead of 12. Students taking the classes earn college credit while still in high school.
The change will take place for classes starting in the fall of 2017, Kruse said, giving teachers about 18 months to secure the additional credits. In addition to needing current instructors to take more classes, Kruse said he also wanted the board to think about what the district will do in the future, when existing instructors retire. At some point, he said, the district may have teachers who have taken no graduate-level courses interested in taking those classes to become eligible to teach the college courses.
“You know it’s a benefit for our students and our community,” Kruse said. “At some point, how do we replace people if we think it’s worth doing.”
