South Central Calhoun School Board President Ron Maulsby has gotten positive feedback from community members after the board scaled back a proposed construction project.
But board member Judy Hungate said she’s still hearing opposition from constituents.
“I think we need to talk more to the older generations,” she said.
Newly appointed board member Darci Lightner agreed.
“I’ve been hearing (similar concerns) a lot,” she said. “The older generations are concerned, class sizes are getting bigger. Why are we seeking to build this big gym when we need classrooms?”
Some board members said they have heard community members questioning the second gym at the middle school.
Maulsby said the gyms are for academic purposes – recess helps students meet state physical activity requirements, and when activities are planned for the middle school gym during class time, the middle school physical education classes lose their classroom space.
Earlier in the meeting, when talking about a facility use policy and feee for the district, Maulsby said community members he has talked to want to see their children have more chances for open gym to practice basketball.
