The list of items damaged at South Central Calhoun High School by the May 10 tornado has grown as insurance agents and contractors have continued cleanup there.
SCC school board members got an update on damage at their meeting Monday evening in Rockwell City.
In addition to roofing material being blown off both the main building and the fine arts addition, Project Manager Kevin Istas said fencing around the high school track will need to be replaced. The bleachers and track were also damaged, as were windows on the main building’s south side. Water damage from several heavy rains following the tornado and in the week after the storm has been located on all three floors, and in some areas, school officials will also need to authorize asbestos abatement, as some of the tile adhesive includes the toxic material, Istas said.
“The roofs are now secured,” Istas said. “The windows on the south side will be temporaried in better. We were able to get a draft (project) scope on Saturday.”
Still, Istas said he’s expecting at least another week before coming up with a full estimate of the scope and cost of repairs.
