In 2015, the Urbandale Police Department hired Brady Farrington one spot ahead of his good friend Justin Martin.
That move gave Farrington a badge number one higher than Martin, and that slight bit of seniority entitled Farrington to a spot on the department’s day shift. Martin was assigned nights.
Farrington, speaking to the Rockwell City Rotary Club July 7, said he thinks about whether he would have been patrolling in the location Martin was on Nov. 2, when a gunman shot and killed Martin.
“Sometimes I have that guilt,” Farrington said, pausing as his voice broke. “Why wasn’t it me and why was it Justin?”
The two grew up together in Rockwell City, attending school together, joining the Boy Scouts together. They attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at the same time and both were hired by the Urbandale Police Department.
