The threat of rain early Saturday morning didn’t stop motorcyclists and law enforcement supporters from coming out in force for the 2017 Hometown Heroes Memorial Ride.
This year’s ride took participants from Rockwell City east to Farnhamville, then to Otho, through Dolliver State Park to Jewell, to Dayton, Lohrville and back to Rockwell City.
Riders hail from as far away as southern Iowa, Rockwell City Fire Chief Shane Voith said.
“This year we pushed the Des Moines and Urbandale area,” he said, adding two Rockwell City firemen did an interview with Des Moines TV station KCCI to raise awareness of the ride.
Weather for the ride is always a concern; Voith and other organizers were keeping an eye on the radar, tracking the rain that threatened to dampen the route. Most were optimistic that the rain would stop not long after the 11 a.m. start time.
