Joan Schaffer

Joan Schaffer, 91, of Lake City, passed away at her home Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023.  Joan Lois was born Nov. 6, 1932, to parents Paul and Bessie (Sharkey) Hendricks in Rands. She grew up in Rands and later on the family farm east of Lake City, where she graduated from Lake City High School with the class of 1950.

Joan was united in marriage July 13, 1952 to Roy Schaffer at Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City. This union was blessed with four children: Randy, Ed, Sue and Lory. Together they raised their family on farms in the Lake City and Lohrville area where Joan was a proud farmwife. Joan also worked for Air Electric Machine Company until her retirement in 1992.

In her free time, Joan enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and taking trips to casinos, and she was always known for making and giving away amazing candies at Christmas time. Joan was an active church volunteer, including being involved in the ladies’ group and annual nut sales and being a reader for worship services. She also volunteered her time helping others at Shady Oaks and Opportunity Living.  Everyone who knew Joan knows she was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed having coffee with her friends. Most of all, Joan cherished her time spent with her family. She loved her family gatherings and attending her kids, grandkids and great-grandkid's events.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Randy (Laura) Schaffer, of Lake View; Ed (Joan) Schaffer, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Sue (Jim) Janssen, of Lake City, and Lory Jackson, of Lake City; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister Glenda Hendricks, of Lake City, and brother Leon (Judy) Hendricks, of Lake City.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Schaffer; parents: Paul and Bessie Hendricks; siblings: Roland Hendricks and Shirley Hunziker; son-in-law Jason Jackson and grandson Nick Schaffer.

Funeral Service was set for 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at the Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City with burial in the Lake City Cemetery in Lake City, and visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Lampe & Powers Funeral Home.
