Mike Sexton’s win is the South Central Calhoun School District’s loss.

Sexton, an at-large school board member, prevailed in a race for Iowa State House District 10. He submitted his resignation to the school board at a meeting Nov. 17. State law does not allow officials to hold two elected positions simultaneously.

School board members expressed their gratitude for Sexton’s years of service on the board, while putting together a plan to find his replacement. The board will accept applications through Dec. 12 from community members interested in serving. Superintendent Jeff Kruse said the board may select a new member with a majority vote. The new member would serve until a September special election, unless another, unselected candidate protested the process and collected enough signatures on a petition to bring a challenge. In that case, school officials said, there might be a special election this spring, possibly in April. Whichever candidate prevailed in such a special election would still need to run in the September election.
