Last week’s tour of the Iowa State Capitol building and visit with legislators had something for everyone – a meeting with Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds for the politically minded, a look at the decor and hand-crafted furniture for the artistically minded and information about the building’s past for the history buffs.
South Central Calhoun High School Interact members visited the Capitol, touring the building and speaking with state Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink and state Rep. Mike Sexton. Student Nic Englin performed the national anthem on his euphonium as the day’s session began.
“I was a bit nervous,” Englin said, adding he felt the usual pre-performance nerves, which dissipated once he began to play. “It was really cool.”
Englin said he learned a little about worker’s compensation and the business climate in Iowa, just by listening to a discussion of a bill on the subject. He was also interested in a more high-profile topic – collective bargaining.
