Health care is the most dangerous profession, at least when it comes to work place injuries, Vetter Health Services Safety Coordinator Ed Remm says.
Remm visited Shady Oaks Care Center March 9 to honor the nursing facility for reaching the one-year mark injury free.
“If you’re building bridges and you’re working with steel, you know how it’s going to respond,” Remm said. “When you’re working with people, you don’t know what they’re going to do.”
Shady Oaks Administrator Jennifer Blair said the majority of workplace injuries, at least in care facilities, come from moving patients, or from slips, trips and falls, in and out of the building. Working together, Shady Oaks staff members came up with some innovative ways to limit the risk of such falls. This winter, staffers could grab a bag of ice melt to take with them to their vehicles, because while the parking lot and sidewalks were being treated, space between vehicles were still slippery. The facility also has Yaktrax, cleats that can be placed over shoes and that provide better traction when walking on snowy and icy surfaces.
