Supervisors again raise question of flood insurance program

Another Twin Lakes resident is running into problems after federal officials classified the lakes as a flood plain.
A homeowner there passed his complaint to Supervisor Mike Cooper, noting that his mortgage provider was requiring the purchase of flood insurance. Without the county participating in the National Flood Insurance Program, such insurance can be prohibitively expensive, homeowners have complained. The Board of Supervisors voted last year to join the program, but have been looking for someone to fill a single opening comprised of duties from several county departments, including managing the flood insurance program. County officials are also considering the possibility of partnering with another county to employ someone to perform flood insurance program duties.
“If we don’t as a county do something, we’re going to be having some issues this spring, because properties are going to be changing hands,” Cooper said.
