A few campers at Featherstone Park using fireworks damaged a dock and some recreational vehicles, Calhoun County Sheriff Scott Anderson told the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors July 11.
That was the extent of damage caused by fireworks, which the Iowa Legislature legalized this spring. The Board of Supervisors in June approved a measure that banned the use of fireworks in the county without a permit, but only three people applied for the free permit. Anderson said he and his deputies were frustrated by the situation. With a six-officer department, Anderson said he and his deputies couldn’t respond to all of the reports of unpermitted fireworks use, most of which were centered around Twin Lakes.
The first few weeks of the new law went smoothly, but starting about a week before July 4, the use of fireworks ramped up.
