Youth play sets sail for Treasure Island

Village Square Theatre’s Summer Children’s Theatre has set it sights on the literary classic “Treasure Island” this summer.
At a rehearsal earlier this month, Director John Smith handed out costumes, making sure each of the young pirates received all of the tools of the cutthroat trade.
“What are these?” Smith asked the young actors, holding aloft a plastic replica of a sharp-edged weapon. “They’re cutlasses, not swords.”
The pirates eagerly took possession of the cutlasses, experimenting with different ways of sliding the broad weapons in their sashes. They also donned skull-and-crossbones-decorated bandanas, skullcaps and eye patches.
