U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley said he thinks President Donald Trump is still adjusting to what may have been a “rude awakening” when the president took office in January.
Grassley, a Republican who has served 36 years in the U.S. Senate, said before talking with South Central Calhoun High School April 19 he has been invited to the White House significantly more since Trump took office than when President Barack Obama was in office. That’s understandable, Grassley said, considering he and the president are in the same party.
“It seems to me like there’s a lot more outreach,” Grassley said of the Trump administration. “He’s got a heck of lot to learn about government.”
Responding to recent criticisms of Trump’s frequent trips to a Mar-a-Lago, his Florida resort. U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst on April 18 joined the criticism, saying at a town hall meeting in Iowa that the president should probably spend more time at the White House. Grassley said he could agree that Trump probably shouldn’t travel as much as he has so far, but added he was hesitant to criticize Trump for travel when Obama also traveled frequently. The New York Times reported last week Trump has gone golfing 17 times in his first 81 days in office; Obama and President George W. Bush didn’t golf at all during the same period in their presidencies.
