The Lake City Alumni Association recognized the elementary teachers by presenting them checks for $100 to help reimburse the teachers for their personal expenses for their classrooms. Teachers turned in copies of receipts for their expenses and received up to $100 back. The Association is aware of the financial burden that sometimes falls upon an elementary teacher and wanted to offer assistance as a way of thanks for their commitment to the education of our students. 25 teachers took advantage of the offer. The same day – the South Central Calhoun Elementary was named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon school. One of four Iowa schools recognized for demonstrating overall academic excellence or for their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Teachers recognized were (front row, left to right): Sheri Tibbitts Hanks ’68, Jane Henely; (second row): Marleta Smith ’04, Cindy Feldhans; (third row): Kari Case, Britney Jo Feldhans; (back row): Mary Gutshall, Rita Frank, Deanne Nutter Grantham ’71.
