A Dutch group is collecting photos of thousands of American servicemen who were killed during World War II, then buried in the Netherlands.
Lake City’s Ivan Thede is one of those men. Thede, a 23-year-old technical sergeant, died Sept. 17, 1944, near Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The group, The Faces of Margraten, seeks to document information about all of the roughly 10,000 Americans buried in the American War Cemetery in Margraten.
Timothy Nosal, director of public affairs for the American Battle Monuments Commission, said he thinks the continued tribute to American soldiers at the cemetery is wonderful.
“As an American, I’m honored to know how much the people of the Netherlands respect the United States and those who served in World War II, especially those we lost in the war,” Nosal said in an email to The Graphic-Advocate. “They are truly thankful. The history of grave adoption is remarkable. The tradition started with the temporary cemeteries during the war.”
