Darcy Dougherty Maulsby doesn’t hesitate for a second when asked to pick her personal favorite recipe from the many dishes featured in her latest book, “A Culinary History of Iowa.”
She immediately named the caramel rolls famously served at Lake City and then Southern Cal High School, rolls she ate when she was a student. Always served in conjunction with chili, the rolls are a favorite among alumni of the two schools.
Jerry Schleisman of Lake City shared the recipe with Maulsby for inclusion in the book, which hits bookshelves Aug. 1.
“It’s amazing how many noteworthy food stories there are in Iowa,” Maulsby said in an interview earlier this month at her rural Calhoun County home.
