At the Lake City Public Library Wednesday afternoon, more than a dozen children tried their hands at a variety of Native American games, the origins of which date back more than 100 years.
Linda Burkhart, director of the Sanford Museum in Cherokee, first demonstrated the games, then helped the children with little contests and competitions.
Burkhart started the afternoon with a brief explanation of the games, which she said weren’t all that different from playing house or school today.
“They were learning the skills they would need as an adult,” she said.
A game in which the children tried to flip half a dozen lima beans from a white side to a painted green side on a plate would have been played with beans and a basket, Burkhart said. Children playing the game would have learned to move quickly and how to make tiny movements to direct the beans.
