Nate Lamphier had considered joining the military, but never took any steps beyond thinking about such service.
Then Sept. 11, 2001, happened. As he watched friends join the military, he decided he needed to, as well. In 2009, Lamphier joined the U.S. Army and spent 21 of the next 36 months away from home, including a year in Iraq.
“I got to see people at their greatest, but also at their worst,” Lamphier told a full house at South Central Calhoun Middle School’s annual Veterans Day program Friday. “I saw Iraqis fighting for freedoms that they may never fully experience, but they did it for future generations.”
In the seven years since he’s left the service, Lamphier said he’s thought of his time in the Army and in Iraq daily. He encouraged veterans to keep in contact with each other, to encourage and help each other.
